Fall’s Gold – Easy forest routes

cycling in autumn

Just because it’s a little colder, there’s no reason you should deprive yourself of a good ride. As the leaves turn to dazzling gold, ambers and brown, why not spend the afternoon admiring the foliage on one of these gentler cycling routes? We picked a journey for each city with an Ampler showroom. The benefit of cycling with an e-bike is that you can take each ride at your leisure, as even the more challenging inclines are less of an issue. Of course, with an Ampler, you can also switch off the motor or reduce its assistance for some extra exercise.

Amsterdam – Cycle between cities

  • Highlights: Houtrak, Spaarndam, Batterijweg
  • Suggested Ampler: Axel
  • Distance: 37,5 km

We picked a beautiful track that’s easy to get to from the city centre and will take you just over an hour and a half. This makes it perfect if you’re exploring the city but also want to see some nature. The route starts at Amsterdam Leylaan train station and you’ll go by dikes, windmills, and bridges and of course through forests to see the autumn colours. You’ll notice from the link to the full route that you’ll cycle close to Haarlem and even the coast. If you like you can alter the cycle ride and make a day trip to Haarlem, which itself is a beautiful city to explore.

Moss – A trip through the forest to a waterfall

  • Highlights: Nesparken, Tollertangen, Mossefossen
  • Suggested Ampler: Curt
  • Distance: 18,3 km

Take this short but spectacular forest road starting and finishing at Moss Train Station. While there is quite a steep incline, to begin with, travelling with your e-bike will make this a breeze so you can take in the pine trees and the scenery. As you go over the Mosseelva river you’ll be sure to see some golden foliage as you pass Tørbjørnsrød. You even get to see the iconic Mossefossen waterfall, which is spectacular any time of the year. There’s even more forest to see toward the end of the route in the green peninsulas of Tollertangen and Nesparken.

Berlin – The flower and cherry blossom route

  • Highlights: Kirschbaumallee, Malchower See, Am Fließgraben
  • Suggested Ampler: Stellar
  • Distance: 21,9 km

Head north of Prenzlauer Berg through Weißensee toward Malchow. This will bring you to Malchower See, a lake surrounded by forests and meadows. This trail is easy to cycle and you can come straight from the city. Gesundbrunnen is very well connected by both the S Bahn and U8. The tour, though sometimes busy, is well paved and pleasant to ride. Not only will you see some beautiful autumn colours but even some historic foliage. Kirschbaumallee is an area filled with Japanese cherry trees donated by the Japanese after Reunification. If you’re lucky they are sometimes in bloom during Autumn.

Zurich – Lakes, forests, mountains and beauty

  • Highlights: Waldegg, Blick auf Türlersee, Buchenegg
  • Suggested Ampler: Stout
  • Distance: 46,3 km

Perhaps the more challenging route on this list, this ride has quite a high elevation. Though an e-bike can trivialise this, the ascent is certainly worth it regardless because of the incredible mountain views. Even though some sections may be steeper there are plenty of wide roads and excellent bike paths on this tour. The pass through the Albis Buchenegg in particular is dense with forests and is spectacular in autumn. However, any cyclist enthusiast in Zurich will know there’s almost never a bad time of the year to gaze at the lakes and vistas. Just make sure you have warm clothes and are well prepared.

Tallinn – Head around the coast

  • Highlights: Ninamaa Fog Sirens, Tiskre Stream, Tilgu Koopad
  • Suggested Ampler: Axel, Curt
  • Distance: 58,6 km

Wrap up warm and pick a sunny Autumn day to cycle through the forest and alongside some beaches. This is a longer route that you can start from Tondi station. There are plenty of interesting things to see as well as some thick foliage. Although the distance is longer there are opportunities to dismount and enjoy the views for a rest. As there are small sections of rougher terrain we recommend either a sturdy bike to make it over or a light one if you wish to disembark. The Ninamaa Fog Sirens is a highlight, built in 1987 but now abandoned, they were erected to alert ships off the coast during thick mists. Tilgu Koopad is a great place to stop for a picnic, it’s a natural series of sandstone cliffs and caves that look out onto the sea.
