Gen. 1 and Gen. 2 – what to expect

We’ve grown as a company and with that have come two different generations of our signature lightweight e-bikes. As there are still available models of our original Amplers, named Generation 1 (or G1s), we thought we’d highlight what made them such standouts. Both our original design and their next Generation (G2) are high-quality modes of transportation. Here is a run-down of what to expect if you purchase either.

A backstory

Ampler started as a passion project between three friends in Estonia with one thing in mind – how to create an e-bike that feels comfortable, looks good and is practical for day-to-day use. The original prototype aimed to make an electric bike that felt and looked like a classic European city bike, separate from the bulkier counterparts on the market. One of the key factors was keeping the battery and other electrical components hidden within the frame while ensuring the drive was smooth.

In May 2016 the team was ready to introduce their Ampler e-bikes and eventually had five designs, from robust and sturdy, to low-step and chic, to sporty and sleek. Over five years these five designs became the original Ampler bikes or, Ampler Generation 1s.

Although the bikes have improved, the company has grown, and you can find them in more places, there are some things that haven’t changed. We still have our own dedicated factory in Estonia and we are still striving to sustainably impact urban commuting.

What is the difference between the first and second generations?

The first generation, or G1, is essentially the tried and true version of our original designs. They were rolled out between 2016 – 2021 with a dedicated, hand-assembled manufacturing process in our factory in Estonia. We have the five personalised and signature models that also come as Generation 2s. These are of course: Stellar, Juna, Curt, Axel and Stout. We added key features to the G2s like integrated displays, new frame sizes, a new painting processes, among other software improvements we’ll go through later.

When we created the Generation 2 bikes it meant a change in our in-house production methods. Therefore, the current process is now completely dedicated to our new models and Generation 1s are limited to the stock left over before this shift in 2021. If you wish, you can still purchase one of these classics, which are currently available in the following models:

Curt 2021

Stellar 2021

Stout 2021

Why buy a Generation 1?

There are several reasons to pick a G1. Perhaps the most obvious is that they come at a lower cost compared to their successors. While still being of extremely high quality, you have the chance of joining our Ampler family at an attractive price.

Another reason is that because they are built and in supply, they are ready to be shipped. Usually, when you order a G2 we begin the hand-assembling process in Estonia and get it ready to be shipped. With G1s they are ready to go and can either be picked up at a dedicated showroom or shipped to you in 7-14 days.

Our original Amplers are tried and tested. We had a few years of experience to perfect these models and you’ll be receiving G1s built in 2021. They are a reputable and highly reviewed e-bike. Here’s what top critics have said about our beloved Stellar and Curt G1s.

Like all our bikes the straightforward nature of them means any run-of-the-mill issues or gear wear and tear can be fixed at most bike shops. Any electrical components issues like the motor or battery we will of course handle. Each G1 comes with their own warranty guarantee too (2 years).

However, don’t be dismayed: a G1 is incredibly reliable. In fact, in 2021 only a fraction of all sold bikes were returned under warranty. Keep in mind that every Ampler is quality-tested before arriving at your door. The G1s are high-end e-bikes that will last you for years to come.

The G1 and G2 guarantee a great ride with an acceleration that feels seamless from the first peddle. We have a sophisticated torque sensor so every trip regardless of incline or distance is easier while feeling more natural.

Key differences between the generations (They grow up so fast)

Of course, Generation 2 is the pinnacle of all our hard work up to this point. There are significant upgrades that put them at the forefront of e-bike design and functionality. Here are the key highlights of a G2 compared to the G1:

The display: Our generation 2 Amplers each have an integrated display that fits elegantly into the frame, matching the subtle style of our e-bikes. The screen tells you your battery level and key ride statistics such as distance per trip and average speed.

The power button: The G1 has its power button on the lower left side of the seat tube with an LED circular border to signify battery level. With the G2 the power button is almost as hidden as the battery. You can find it on the underside of the top tube beneath the display for even easier access. The single button still controls power and lights and you can switch between assist modes (100%, 70%, and 0% by default).

The painting process: The painting process: We upgraded our painting process while switching manufacturing to G2. Learning from the automotive industry we now use an in-house powder-coating process. With that, we also expanded our choice of colours across our five models.

Frame size and brake lights: We want as many people as possible to enjoy the seamless travel experience e-bikes provide. Therefore, we took the opportunity to expand our frame sizes so those even taller (between 1.5 – 2m) can get on the saddle. We also added new fender integrated rear lights to fit the sleek style of our e-bikes. Juna and Axel benefit from a new brake light function.

App and updates: Expect to always be up to date with our new and improved app. The bike will receive automatic updates as we release it over-the-air (OTA). All you need to do is keep the app up to date and any new developments will automatically be applied to the bike. Our G2 Amplers have GPS functionality built into the bikes so you can see where the bike is, an option to track your ride statistics, as well as the ability to customise your three motor support modes.

Expect the best

So there we have it. The Ampler e-bike as we know it has grown up quickly, but either option is a fantastic choice for an e-bike. The Ampler G1 is still highly revered with more than 15,000 roaming the streets today, each carrying a happy customer. You can still get one while stocks last, at a great price, and you can expect it to be delivered fast. The G2 simply takes it one step further with upgraded components and a few changes for even more convenience. Whichever generation you choose we wish you happy riding.
