This guide gives an overview of all of these components, making it easier for you to choose your own electric bike.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E-bike motors \u2013 should you choose mid-drive or hub-drive motor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>E-bike motor is what gives juice to your bike and moves it forward. There are two types of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/en\/support\/motor#ampler-motor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e-bike motors<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 mid-drive motors and hub-drive motors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mid-drive motor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/en\/support\/motor#hub-drive-vs-mid-drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-drive motor<\/a>&nbsp;is placed between the pedals at the bottom bracket of the bicycle. It uses the bicycle drivetrain to transfer the motor\u2019s power to the rear wheel and move the bike forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mid-drive motors come in different sizes and weights, but in general, they are rather bulky, making the bike look \u201cfat\u201d from the frame. Instead of placing the motor where the pedals are, the hub motor is integrated into the wheel making the connection between the motor and the ground directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A front hub motor&nbsp;is often easier to install than a rear hub motor.&nbsp;Having a motor in the front hub basically makes the bike all-wheel driven which can help to ride on soft terrains.&nbsp;However, a heavy front hub motor can put too much weight in the front and make the front wheel spin in wet conditions on inclines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Placing the motor in the rear wheel hub&nbsp;often results in more balanced weight distribution of the bike.<\/strong>&nbsp;This gives a smoother acceleration and a more natural feel to the ride. A rear hub motor is also easier to hide behind the gears, giving the e-bike a stealthy regular bicycle look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The benefits of a hub-drive motor are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Requires less maintenance than a mid-drive motor.<\/li><li>Hub motor doesn\u2019t add any extra stress to chain or shifters because it is not connected to the main pedal drive system. There are also no drivetrain losses because of that.<\/li><li>Small hub motors can be basically invisible behind the cassette of the rear hub.<\/li><li>Having a motor separate from the pedals gives the bike smoother and quieter operation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Downsides of a hub-drive motor are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Most hub motors\u00a0have a fixed gear ratio, making it less efficient on steep hills than mid-drive motors.<\/li><li>In case of a flat tire, e-bikes with hub motors are more difficult to fix because the motor is placed on the wheel.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-14637\">All&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/locale\/e-bikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ampler e-bikes<\/a>&nbsp;have a 48 V 250 W brushless DC rear hub motor. We\u2019ve placed the motor in the rear wheel to give the bike a natural feel and a stealthy, regular bicycle look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E-bike Batteries \u2013 What types of batteries should you use on an e-bike?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/en\/support\/battery#how-to-take-care-of-your-e-bike-battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E-bike batteries<\/a>&nbsp;are one of the most crucial components of the electric bicycle. Without the battery, you wouldn\u2019t be able to enjoy the electric motor on your bike. In general, there are two main types of e-bike batteries \u2014 lead-acid and lithium batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sealed Lead-Acid battery (SLA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SLAs are the oldest type of rechargeable batteries.&nbsp;They are the least commonly used batteries on an e-bike. SLAs are very heavy \u2014 they weigh three times as much as lithium batteries. They\u2019re also large, making it more difficult to place them on an e-bike. SLAs only last for half as long as nickel or lithium batteries and thus are not useful for commuter e-bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lithium-phosphate (LiFePO4)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithium-phosphate batteries are one of the safest and most reliable moderns battery types. They are commonly used for energy storage systems where maximum lifetime is important. Due to higher costs and lower energy density, they are not so popular for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lithium-ion battery (Li-ion)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern Li-ion batteries offer a very good cycle life, are safe in a controlled environment and have a great power-to-weight ratio. That is why&nbsp;<strong>Li-ion batteries are the most commonly used batteries for e-bikes and electric cars<\/strong>. In fact, Tesla Model S and Ampler bike batteries are assembled from very similar Li-ion cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Li-ion batteries have a very high energy density<\/strong>&nbsp;and their self-discharge rate is much lower than many other battery types. It takes 2.5 hours for a full charge which will give on average 70 km of electric assist range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electric Assist Modes \u2013 should you prefer throttle-activated or pedal-assisted e-bikes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>E-bike motors can be activated in two ways \u2014 with a throttle or by pedalling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Throttle-activated e-bikes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A throttle mode e-bike works similarly to motorcycles and scooters<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 it has a little throttle mounted on the handlebar. Think of the throttle as a connector between you and the bicycle electronics. When you activate the throttle, it drives power and moves the bike forward, without you needing to pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three types of throttles: half grip twist, thumb, and push button.&nbsp;They all get the same work done; the only difference is the way you engage with it (twist or push).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The benefits of a throttle mode are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The throttle makes it easier to get the bike moving from a standstill.<\/li><li>You can cruise along without the need to pedal.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Downsides of a throttle mode are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>More powerful e-bikes with throttle are legally classified as mopeds or motorcycles,&nbsp;thus needing a licence plate, compulsory insurance and a rider wearing a helmet.<\/li><li>E-bikes with throttle-only mode are not allowed in Europe.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle-1024x625.png\" alt=\"throttle-activated ebike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle-1024x625.png 1024w, https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle-768x468.png 768w, https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle-600x366.png 600w, https:\/\/amplerbikes.com\/library\/assets\/2019\/03\/throttle.png 1200w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-14364\">The motor is activated by pushing the throttle on the handlebar.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Currie_Electric_Bicycle_Conversion_-_throttle.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Image<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:Stanistani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanistani<\/a>&nbsp;\/&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC BY 2.0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pedal-assisted e-bikes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A pedal-assisted bicycle (<em>pedelec<\/em>) can be moved forward only when pedalling.<\/strong>&nbsp;The bicycle has a sensor mounted on the bottom bracket or pedal crank arm that can tell whether the pedals are turning or not, and activate the motor accordingly. Some pedal-assisted e-bikes have a sensor measuring how hard you pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadence sensor measures if the rider is pedalling.&nbsp;It works like a simple ON\/OFF switch \u2014 it turns the motor on when you start pedalling and turns it off when the pedalling is stopped. The rider has to control the boost level and speed by manually adjusting the electric assist mode. The cadence sensor is cheaper compared to torque sensors, but the pedal assistance is often counterintuitive, bulky and laggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Torque sensor measures how hard the rider is pedalling<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 the harder you pedal, the more power it gives to the motor. Torque sensor amplifies your every input in real-time, making you feel like a superhuman. The display is the \u2018window\u2019 to your e-bike that lets you adjust the motor settings and check the electronics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>E-bike controller<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A controller is the onboard computer that controls all aspects of your e-bike.<\/strong>&nbsp;Its main task is to connect the power, the motor and the sensors, and make sure everything runs smoothly. Inside the controller is a circuit board that manages voltage and amperage input and output, and controls all of the critical functions of your e-bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An e-bike controller gets energy from the battery and directs it to the motor according to the user and sensor inputs. It monitors battery voltage, bike speed, motor power, pedalling activity and more.&nbsp;The controller also controls functions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pedal Assist<\/li><li>Motor power<\/li><li>Voltage cut off<\/li><li>Maximum speed<\/li><li>Integrated lights<\/li><li>Built-in display (if that exists)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>E-bike displays<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E-bike display works like a control unit and a window to your bike<\/strong>. Normally, the display shows the riding speed, the level of assistance that\u2019s been activated, and the range left in the battery.
