The Joy of Winter Cycling

man on e-bike winter

Cold weather doesn’t mean a slow ride. We believe an e-bike is a year-round tool to get you where you want to be. Whether commuting or touring, we wanted to share some ideas as to why we love cycling in winter. Enjoy some tips and tricks for cycling this season.

Why cycle in winter?

You have to be crazy to go cycling in the cold, right? Wrong! Here are several reasons why you should consider getting out there and braving the elements.

Fresh air

There’s a certain majesty to a crisp, clear winter day and your body will always benefit from good exercise. Instead of seeing low temperatures as an excuse to stay indoors take to the road and benefit from the same perks found in any good bike ride. There’s plenty of cycling gear to keep you warm so you can enjoy the great outdoors.

Gain confidence

If you can cycle in winter you can cycle any time of the year. It may sound simple but it’s true. Challenge yourself this season and get to work, the gym or anywhere with your e-bike. Discipline always surpasses motivation. Make cycling in winter a standard to the point where getting anywhere on the bike is as natural as leaving the house.

Save money

Like any time of the year, you can save on transport costs by taking a bike. With energy prices soaring and the cost of living rising, being a winter cyclist has never made more sense. So give up the petrol and public transport costs and take charge of your commute this winter. Have fun with the process by tracking the money you save. Use it to treat yourself or simply enjoy the added cushion you’ve created in a fun and sustainable way.

Embrace the burn

When temperatures drop, your muscles can become tenser. This is not as painful as it might sound. In fact, it means if you’re trying to get fit then cycling is a great method! It’s been proven that active and regular exercise during the winter will help burn extra calories and raise stamina. This is true even on an e-bike, as a study by the Dutch channel RTL recently showed.

Feel better

We all get a little sad during winter. Shorter days, less socialising, and the ungodly amount of extra laundry can get anyone down. Seasonal Affectional Disorder (SAD) is real, people. However, just as you’ll burn extra calories, save money, and get a new lease of life on winter days, your mood will undoubtedly improve. Don’t be a victim of winter, own it.

Top tips for winter cycling

Here are a few key things to keep in mind not just for an e-bike but any bicycle. While cycling in winter has its benefits it also comes with a few potential risks that need to be considered. But don’t be dismayed, these are easily overcome.

Winter tires

Just like with any normal bike, it’s easy to change from summer to winter tires with a bit more grip. Simply keep in mind the particular width for your model. If you’re in a particularly icy or snowy place this is highly recommended. In Estonia, where our headquarters are based, this is an essential addition for our colleagues riding to work.

Let a bit of air out

If you don’t have winter tires be sure to let just a bit of air out. The reason is that slightly saggy tires create more traction and therefore keep you more secure on slippery roads. On the side of your tires, it will say what the minimum pressure is for that model. If in doubt, then always ask a bike mechanic for their advice.

Keep warm

Your hands are going to get cold while cycling, not just because of temperature but the fact you are gripping the handlebars. This means less circulation and freezing fingers, so good gloves are crucial.

Be bright

You need to make sure you are wearing durable and warm gear for obvious reasons. However, as it gets dark so early be sure to stay visible. Cover that winter jacket with a luminous safety vest, make sure your bike lights are in good condition and make your turns obvious with hand signals.

Lubrication

Keeping your bike chain lubricated is crucial in winter months because of the icy air and salt on the streets. It has a tendency to wear out the chain. This is made obvious by the squeaky sound you might hear while cycling. Luckily this product is cheap and easy to buy, simply clean the chain and apply. Of course, if you bought one of our bikes with a carbon drive, then it’s a lot less hassle – but it’s still worth giving it a clean if it gets dirty.

Battery safe

When using an e-bike, be aware of proper charging methods during winter. If your Ampler has been sitting in sub-zero temperatures for an extended period, be sure to take it inside and let it warm up before charging. This will give you the best range and keep the battery nice and healthy.

Curb your enthusiasm

It’s not just you against the elements but also any and all urban hazards. Snow is notorious for hiding rocks, potholes and other dangers. Simply being aware of this and being careful will keep you in much better stead.
